Pomona-Pitzer Comes Up Just Short Against La Sierra

Riverside, Calif. – Sophomore guard Emi Hashizume (San Mateo, Calif. - pictured) had 20 points and junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) added 19, but the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell just short in a 64-59 loss to La Sierra on Monday.

With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 0-7 on the year, including two losses to La Sierra, which also defeated Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont last week 68-51. The Golden Eagles improve to 3-13 with the win.

The Sagehens led 31-28 at the half, behind 13 points from Hashizume. However, La Sierra shot 50 percent in the second half (14-28), and held Pomona-Pitzer to just 31 percent (9-29) as it was able to come away with the win.

Ashley Baumgaertel led La Sierra with 14 points and 12 rebounds (eight offensive). Natalia Hawthorne had 14 points and eight steals, while Joirdan Jones added 11 points for the Golden Eagles.

Sones knocked down 5-of-7 shots from beyond the arc on her way to 19 points, while also adding five steals. Junior guard Vanessa Ho (San Francisco, Calif.) made her first start of the year for the Sagehens and had eight points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Pomona-Pitzer will return to action on Friday night at 7:30 when it takes on Arizona Christian in another rematch. The Firestorm won the first match-up at the David Wells Classic on Friday, Nov. 25 by a 103-83 final.
