Hot Hand From Sones Leads Sagehens Past Caltech

Pasadena, Calif. – Junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit six three-pointers in the first half and tied a career-high with 27 points to lead the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team to a 68-42 win over Caltech on Thursday evening.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 4-18 overall and 2-9 in the SCIAC, while Caltech remains winless at 0-21 overall and 0-11 in conference play.

Sones outscored Caltech in the first half all by herself as she had 20 points in the first stanza, on six three-pointers and one two-point jumper, staking the Sagehens to a 36-18 halftime lead. Caltech was within 20-15 at one point, but Sones hit three-pointers on the next two Pomona-Pitzer possessions to start a 16-3 run to close out the half, which also ended with another Sones three-pointer with 11 seconds left.

Caltech started the second half on a 6-0 run to pull within 36-24, but Sones had an old-fashioned three-point play to stop the run, and the Sagehens weren't threatened thereafter. Sones capped off her evening with a jumper with 2:31 to go, giving her 27 points, matching her personal best set earlier this season against La Verne.

Defensively the Sagehens had 16 steals, led by seven from freshman point guard Caroline Zaia (Napa, Calif.) and four from senior forward Asha Gipson (San Diego, Calif.). Gipson finished with nine points on 3-3 shooting, to go along with nine rebounds, while freshman forward Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska) was the only player besides Sones in double figures for the Sagehens with 11 points (on 5-9 shooting). Theresa Juarez led Caltech with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday, when it travels to La Verne for a 5 p.m. contest.
