Sagehens Fall In Nailbiter In 2012-13 Season Opener

Claremont, Calif. - The University of Dallas overcame a six-point halftime deficit to build an eight-point lead in the second half and held on for a 67-62 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Friday evening on the first day of the David Wells Classic at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Junior guard Erin Edmonds (Salem, Ore. - pictured) led the Sagehens with 16 points on 5-5 shooting from the floor and 6-7 from the foul line, as they finally opened their season on the third try. Last Thursday's game at Hope International was postponed due to mechanical problems in HIU's gym, while Tuesday's game against Linfield was canceled when Linfield came down with a case of food poisoning.

Dallas, which was led by 13 points and 11 assists from point guard Kylie Yoshimura, improves to 2-1.

A three-point play from Yoshiumra gave Dallas a 45-37 lead with 11:54 to go after the Sagehens led 27-21 at halftime. The Sagehens were able to come back and tie the score 51-51 with 6:14 to go on a three-pointer from Dana Brozost-Kelleher (Washington, D.C.), and then tied the score again 58-58 on two foul shots with 4:12 left from sophomore guard Ruthie Shapiro (Moraga, Calif.).

Brooke Hagemann, though, gave Dallas the lead for good with two foul shots and Yoshimura found Kurt in the paint for a lay-up with 3:00 to go to make the score 62-58. Two Edmonds foul shots with 52 seconds left cut the lead in half, and after a Dallas turnover, Shapiro had a good look at a go-ahead three-pointer with 19 seconds left, but it hit off the rim, and Kurt leaked out for a fast break lay-up to push the lead to four.

Senior guard Vanessa Ho (San Francisco, Calif.) came back with two foul shots with nine seconds left to give the Sagehens a chance, but Kurt hit both ends of a one-and-one to seal it, and added a defensive rebound at the other end to finish it off.

Rust wasn't a factor early, as Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 14-6 lead early on two foul shots from sophomore Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska). A Shapiro jumper with 39 seconds left gave the Sagehens their largest lead at 27-18, but Yoshimura found Emily Madden for a three-pointer just before the horn to make the score 27-21 at the break.

Shapiro finished with 13 points and senior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 11 for the Sagehens, who also received a game-high 13 rebounds from freshman forward Amelia Hummel (Glenview, Ill.). Kurt finished with a game-high 16 points, while Hagemann finished with 14 and Christy Allen added 13 for Dallas.

Pomona-Pitzer next faces UC Santa Cruz on the second day of the David Wells Classic at CMS tomorrow at 5 p.m.
