Freshmen Provide Lift, But Sagehens Fall To Redlands

Redlands, Calif. - Freshman forward Jenn Okonkwo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and freshman guard Juliah Shay Kim (Bakersfield, Calif.) had 11 points apiece, but it wasn't enough as unbeaten Redlands defeated Pomona-Pitzer 73-49 in SCIAC action on Saturday evening.

With the win, Redlands improves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC, while the Sagehens slip to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Bulldogs were led by Marika Staton, who scored a game-high 17.

Redlands jumped out to a 14-2 lead to start the game, and steadily built its lead up to 42-18 at the half. The Sagehens performed better in the second half, as the last 20 minutes were played evenly at 31-31, but the hole was too deep to climb out of.

Kim was 2-2 from the floor and 6-7 from the foul line on her way to 11 points, while also tying for team-high honors with six rebounds. Okonkwo also had six rebounds and shot 3-6 from the floor and 5-6 from the foul line.

Ashley Sevilla added 12 points for Redlands, while Allison Wong had 10. Sophomore Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska - pictured) had eight points and five steals for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Thursday, when it hosts Cal Lutheran for a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Sagehens also host Wheaton on Saturday at 7 p.m.
