Late Run Pushes La Sierra Past Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - La Sierra broke open a close game late and captured a 60-50 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, La Sierra improves to 9-11 on the year, while Pomona-Pitzer, which was led by 10 points from senior guard Vanessa Ho (San Francisco, Calif. - pictured), falls to 2-9 with the loss.

The Sagehens led 44-40 with 9:42 to play on a jumper from Ho, but La Sierra answered with a 19-2 run to take a 59-46 lead in the closing minutes. Shelby Madigan, who had 14 points, capped off a 10-0 run with a jumper with 7:01 left to make the score 50-44.

Senior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) stopped the bleeding with an 18-foot jumper for the Sagehens to make the score 50-46, but Madigan kicked the ball out to Joirdan Jones for a three-pointer to start a 9-0 run that gave the Golden Eagles control of the game. Jones followed with a short jumper to make the score 55-46 with 4:38 left, and Brittani Walker, who had a game-high 16 points, scored inside with 4:04 left to push the lead into double digits.

Pomona-Pitzer got off to a sluggish start and trailed 15-4 early, but came all the way back to tie the score 28-28 heading into halftime. Ho knocked down a three-pointer late in the half, and then had a steal and a three-point play on a fast break with 24 seconds left to tie the score at 28 heading into intermission.

Sones finished with nine points, freshman forward Jenn Okonkwo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) had eight points and nine rebounds, and freshman forward Amelia Hummel (Glenview, Ill.) added eight points and eight rebounds for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action when it returns to Voelkel Gymnasium on Saturday to face Occidental in a 5 p.m. contest.
