La Verne Wins Shootout Over Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The La Verne Women's Basketball team shot 22-80 from the three-point line in a wild up-and-down affair as it pulled away from the Sagehens in the second half for a 108-75 win on Saturday at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Pomona-Pitzer had six players in double figures, led by 17 from senior guard Vanessa Ho (San Francisco, Calif.), but still lost by a wide margin as it falls to 3-11 overall and 3-5 in the SCIAC. La Verne sees its record improve to 10-6 overall and 7-1 in the SCIAC as it remains tied for first in the loss column.

Leslie Steele led La Verne with 24 points, shooting 8-24 from beyond the arc by herself. Lindsey Foster added 21 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Megan Musashi had 19 points.

Pomona-Pitzer hung tough in the first half, and trailed just 57-50 at the break, as La Verne's Amanda Copas hit a three-pointer in the final minute of the half to stretch the lead to seven. However, the Leopards used a 13-0 run early in the second half to push the lead up to 75-54 and were able to cruise from there.

Freshman forward Jenn Okonkwo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard Ruthie Shapiro (Moraga, Calif.) had 10 points and 10 rebounds to give the Sagehens two players with double-doubles, and it was almost three as freshman guard Juliah Shay Kim (Bakersfield, Calif.) had 12 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 14 points, and sophomore forward Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska) had 10 to complete the six players in double figures.

La Verne took 112 shots overall in the 40 minute game, 80 of which were three-point attempts. The Leopards had 36 offensive rebounds and forced 33 turnovers to add to their possessions.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Thursday when it travels to CMS for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
