Redlands Stifles Pomona-Pitzer For 61-41 Win

Claremont, Calif. - The Redlands Women's Basketball team held Pomona-Pitzer to just 22 percent shooting as it captured a 61-41 win on Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 3-13 overall and 3-7 in the SCIAC, while Redlands improves to 13-5 and 6-3 in league play.  

Pomona-Pitzer kept it close for a while as both teams locked into a defensive struggle. A lay-up from freshman forward Jenn Okonkwo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. - pictured) had the Sagehens within 17-16 with just over four minutes left in the first half. However, Redlands scored eight straight points, including two lay-ups from Claire Stach, to take a 25-17 lead into the break.

With the score still tight at 32-24 with 15 minutes left, reserve guard Ashley Sevilla hit thee streaight three-pointers to suddenly push the lead up to 17 at 41-24. The Sagehens got the lead back down to 13 twice, but couldn't come any closer.

Senior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Sagehens with 11 points, while Okonkwo had nine points and seven rebounds and freshman forward Amelia Hummel (Glenview, Ill.) added eight points and eight rebounds.  Stach finished with 17 points, Brittany Oster had 15, and Sevilla had 12 on four second-half three-pointers for Redlands.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Thursday when it steps out of conference for a non-league game against La Sierra, before returning home to face Caltech on Saturday.
