Career Best From Okonkwo Not Enough As Occidental Stays In Playoff Hunt

Los Angeles, Calif. - Freshman forward Jenn Okonkwo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) had a career-high 25 points, but the Occidental Women's Basketball team used several long scoring runs to capture a 92-50 win over the Sagehens on Saturday evening.

Katelyn Rowe had a triple-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks, and Makenzie Brandon finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals for Occidental, which improves to 15-9 overall and 10-5 in the SCIAC. The Tigers also stay in a tight battle for the top four spots in the conference standings, which receive bids to the conference tournament. Pomona-Pitzer slips to 6-16 overall and 5-10 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Occidental jumped right out of the gates to a 10-2 lead, but the Sagehens were able to withstand the initial punch. Pomona-Pitzer got back within 13-10 quickly, and were still within 17-13 with 12:12 left in the first half on a three-pointer from Vanessa Ho (San Francisco, Calif.).

However, Occidental then went on an 11-0 run to take control, capped off by an old-fashioned three-point play from Brandon with 8:59 left in the opening stanza, to make the score 28-13.

The Tigers went into the halftime break up 45-24, and scored the first six points of the second half to quickly squelch any Sagehen thoughts of a comeback. A 17-0 run midway through the second half helped push the score even further out of reach, escalating the margin from 68-39 to 85-39.

Pomona-Pitzer closes out the regular season with a road game on Monday night at La Verne.
