Pomona-Pitzer Holds Off Caltech For Third Straight Win

Pasadena, Calif. - Sophomore forward Jenn Okonkwo (pictured) had 15 points and freshman forward Basha Brulee-Wills added 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team edged Caltech 53-48 in a SCIAC road game on Saturday evening.

The win was the third in a row for the Sagehens, who improve to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC. Caltech falls to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Pomona-Pitzer held Caltech scoreless for over six minutes in the first half, turning a 14-9 deficit into a 17-14 lead on a lay-up from freshman Mary-Clare Bosco with 5:59 left and never trailed again.

The Beavers kept it close, though, trailing just 25-23 at the half and then getting the Sagehen lead down to 34-33 with 12:46 left. Pomona-Pitzer then took control of the game with a 9-0 run, extending the margin to 10 points at 43-33 on a foul shot from freshman guard Alaina Woo with 8:06 left.

The Beavers had one final push as Stephanie Wong hit a three-pointer with 2:56 left to make the score 47-42 and had another chance to cut it to two moments later but had the shot rim out. Okonkwo then had a key lay-up with 56 seconds left to push the lead to seven. Wong hit two more three-pointers in the final 15 seconds to make the final score look a little closer, but Pomona-Pitzer wasn't seriously threatened in the final minute.

The Sagehens held Caltech to just 29 percent shooting on the night (19-66), the third straight game it has held its opponent below 30 percent on its way to a win. Pomona-Pitzer will try to make it four straight when it travels to CMS on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
