La Sierra Rallies For 67-63 Win Over Sagehens

Riverside, Calif. - The La Sierra Women's Basketball team overcame a 10-point second half deficit to defeat Pomona-Pitzer 67-63 in a non-league game on Saturday evening.

With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 3-6 on the season, while La Sierra improves to 4-9.

Pomona-Pitzer received double-doubles from sophomore forward Jenn Okonkwo (19 points, 15 rebounds) and freshman forward Basha Brulee-Wills (18 points, 11 rebounds) in the loss. Freshman guard Kacie Hitomi (pictured) also chipped in with a career-high 15 pointson 6-9 shooting from the floor.

The Sagehens led 31-24 at the half and stretched their lead out to 45-35 on a foul shot from Okonkwo with 9:30 left in the game. However, La Sierra caught fire and went on a 16-2 run to take a 51-47 lead. Natalie Hawthorne and Shelby Madigan hit back-to-back three-pointers in the middle of the run to turn a 47-43 deficit into a 49-47 lead and Hawthorne followed with two foul shots.

Pomona-Pitzer regrouped, though, and went on a 7-0 run to go back in front, capped off by two foul shots from sophomore Alice Timken with 3:40 to play, making the score 54-51. The Golden Eagles, though, came back with a 7-0 run of their own to take the lead for good, with Brittani Walker going 3-4 at the line and Madigan making a basket and adding two foul shots with 2:02 left.

A Joirdan Jones three-pointer gave La Sierra a 61-56 lead before Mary-Clare Bosco stepped up with a big three-pointer for the Sagehens to make it 61-59 with 1:12 left. However, La Sierra got an offensive rebound and a three-point play with 38 seconds left to squelch Pomona-Pitzer's hopes of a late rally.

Madigan had a game-high 20 points to lead the way for La Sierra. Okonkwo, Brulee-Wills and Hitomi accounted for 52 of Pomona-Pitzer's 63 points.

The Sagehens have two weeks off for exams and the holidays before returning to action on Dec. 30 with a home game against Webster.
