Okonkwo's Career Highs Lead Sagehens Past Whittier

Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore forward Jenn Okonkwo (pictured) set new career highs with 28 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team to an 83-60 win over Whittier on Thursday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-12 overall and 5-7 in the SCIAC, while Whittier slips to 1-19 overall and 1-10 in league play.

Okonkwo shot 9-18 from the floor and 10-15 from the line to score her 28 points, and pulled down nine offensive rebounds of her 18 total. She passed her previous career bests of 25 points and 15 rebounds.

Freshman Basha Brulee-Wills also had a double-double for the Sagehens with 14 points and 10 rebounds, as Pomona-Pitzer held a 63-38 edge on the boards against a smaller Whittier team, which received a strong effort from Dannika Navales-Lugtu (26 points, six rebounds) in the loss.

The Sagehens led 40-26 at the half and built the lead up to 50-33 on an Okonkwo lay-up with 16:35 left. The Poets put together a little run to close to 50-41 on a Navales-Lugtu jump shot, but Pomona-Pitzer came right back with a 7-0 run, capped off by five straight Okonkwo points, to push the lead back up 57-41.

Freshman guard Alaina Woo finished with 11 points for the Sagehens, to go along with five assists, while Kaylah Alexander had 12 points for Whittier.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts CMS for a 7 p.m. contest, in the second half of a doubleheader with the Men's Basketball team, which faces CMS at 5 p.m.
