Pomona-Pitzer Edges La Verne In Thriller

La Verne, Calif. - Sophomore forward Jenn Okonkwo had 21 points and 11 rebounds, including the winning foul shot with 15 seconds left, and freshman guard Alaina Woo (pictured) added a career-best 19 points as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team edged La Verne 62-61 on Thursday.

With the win, the Sagehens are now 8-15 on the year and 6-9 in the SCIAC with one game left to play on Saturday against Occidental.

The game was back and forth in the late going, as the Sagehens led 50-42 after a Woo three-pointer, before Lindsey Foster scored eight straight points for La Verne to help the Leopards surge in front 54-51.  La Verne led 58-55, before a 6-0 Pomona-Pitzer run, keyed by two baskets from Okonkwo and one from freshman Kacie Hitomi, put the Sagehens ahead 61-58 with just over two minutes left.

Alysia Trejo hit a three-pointer to tie the score up with 35 seconds left for the Leopards, but Okonkwo was able to draw a foul with 15 seconds remaining. After missing the first one, Okonkwo made the second and then secured a defensive rebound after Foster missed a would-be game winning jumper.

Woo shot 7-15 overall and 4-6 on three-pointers on her way to a career high 19. Freshman forward Basha Brulee-Wills also had a double-double for the Sagehens with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Occidental game on Saturday will close out the 2013-14 campaign for the Sagehens, who return their entire team next year after playing with almost entirely freshmen and sophomores this season.
