Second Half Spurt Pushes La Sierra Past Sagehens

Riverside, Calif. - The La Sierra Women's Basketball team trailed by seven early in the second half, but used a pair of big scoring runs to pull away and take a 68-51 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday afternoon. 

With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 0-2 on the young season, while La Sierra breaks into the win column and improves to 1-5. 

After trailing 25-24 at the half, the Sagehens surged in fromt 37-30 on a basket by sophomore McKenna VanderKley. However, La Sierra scored the next 10 points and stretched the run to 19-5 to take a 49-42 lead with eight minutes left.

Freshman Anya Quig stopped the run for Pomona-Pitzer momentarily, but La Sierra hit consecutive three-pointers to take a 55-44 lead. Amelia Hummel and Basha Brulee-Wills had back-to-back baskets to trim the lead to 55-48 with 5:45 left and the Sagehens had several chances to cut the deficit even further.

However, La Sierra hit two foul shots with 3:31 to go which started a 13-0 run over the next three minutes to push the lead all the way up to 20. Alaina Woo hit one final three-pointer in the closing seconds to make the final 68-51.

Tina Fantroy had 31 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Pomona-Pitzer was led by Hummel with 12, Woo (pictured) with 11 and Quig with 10, while Brulee-Wills had 10 rebounds.

The Sagehens are back in action on Tuesday when they host Linfield at 6 p.m.
