Inside Dominance Leads Sagehens Past Linfield

Claremont, Calif. – Junior forward Jenn Okonkwo (pictured) and sophomore forward Basha Brulee-Wills both had double-doubles as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team controlled the paint and earned a 69-50 win over Linfield on Tuesday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Okonkwo finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Brulee-Wills added 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Sagehens, who held a 53-37 edge on the boards. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 1-2 overall on the young season, while Linfield slips to 3-2.

The Sagehens led by just five at the half after Linfield scored the final five points of the first stanza, and then the Wildcats added the first four of the second half to pull within 30-29. Pomona-Pitzer wasn't able to shake loose until the final 10 minutes, as a pair of Brulee-Wills foul shots with 9:11 left made the score 48-42, starting a 15-0 run that turned a four-point lead into a 61-42 advantage with 4:17 to go on two Okonwko foul shots.

The 15-0 run was scored almost entirely in the paint and at the foul line, as Brulee-Wills had seven points in the run, Okonkwo had six, and junior forward Amelia Hummel added a lay-up.

Sophomore guard Alaina Woo also had a strong game running the point, finishing with 14 points, four assists and no turnovers in 36 minutes. She also had a pair of three-pointers early in the second half in a 10-2 run that pushed the lead from 32-31 up to 42-33 as Linfield was never able to catch Pomona-Pitzer after an early 5-0 lead.

Amantha Hood led Linfield with 20 points, while Taylor Solomon had 13 points. The Sagehens also held Linfield to just 3-23 shooting from behind the arc (13.0 percent) and 19-63 overall (30.2 percent).

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action when it co-hosts the David Wells Classic, hosting UC Santa Cruz on Friday at 3 p.m. and then playing Augsburg at CMS (Harvey Mudd's Linde Activities Center) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
