Brulee-Wills Helps Sagehens Upset Chapman

Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore forward Basha Brulee-Wills (pictured) had 22 points and 14 rebounds, including a big three-pointer late in regulation, to help the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team upset Chapman 64-60 on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 4-14 on the season and 3-6 in the SCIAC, sweeping two games this week after also knocking off Caltech on Wednesday. Chapman, which won the first meeting between the teams 84-50 on Jan. 14, falls to 6-3 in the SCIAC (8-9 overall) with the loss.

The Panthers struggled to an 8-50 first half shooting from the floor, as Pomona-Pitzer took a 33-23 lead into intermission. Chapman gradually surged in front in the second half and held a 54-51 lead with three minutes left after a layup from Megan Charles.

However, sophomore guard Alaina Woo hit two foul shots to close the lead to one, and sophomore guard Kacie Hitomi hit a tough runner from the right side of the lane to give Pomona-Pitzer the lead back at 55-54 with 2:10 left. After Chapman missed, Hitomi kicked the ball to Brulee-Wills in the corner, who swished only her second three-pointer of the season to put Pomona-Pitzer ahead 58-54.

Chapman hit one foul shot to close the lead to three, but junior forward Amelia Hummel hit two big foul shots to push the lead to five. The Panthers had one final chance as an Andrea Villanueva three-pointer rimmed out late that would have cut it to one, and Lauren Sato converted a lay-up off the offensive rebound with 0.9 seconds left to close to 62-60, but Brulee-Wills made two foul shots to seal the win.

Hummel finished with 14 points for Pomona-Pitzer, while freshman guard Anya Quig had nine points, six rebounds, four assists and four blocks. Sato led Chapman with 18 points, while Villanueva added 15.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Wednesday for a road game at Cal Lutheran.
