PASADENA, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team defeated the Caltech Beavers 61-55 for their third straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season.
Caltech was led by Kate Lewis who collected 16 points and 11 rebounds. Stephanie Wong was also in double digits with 15 points in the loss for the Beavers.
The Sagehens opened up the game on a 10-2 run capped off by a Hummel jump shot with 6:02 left in the first quarter. The Beavers cut down the Sagehens' lead to 14-11 after ending the quarter on a 9-4 run.
The Beavers went on to tie the game 16-16 in the second quarter after a Nika Haleftiras jump shot with 8:15 left to go before half time.
Caltech outscored Pomona-Pitzer 19-9 in the second quarter and went into the locker room with a 30-23 advantage. Brulee-Wills led the Sagehens with five points and four rebounds at the break.
Pomona-Pitzer came out hot to open up the third quarter on a 10-4 run to cut the Caltech lead down to one point at 34-33 and forced Caltech to burn a timeout with 6:17 remaining in the quarter.
The Beavers closed out the third quarter on a 12-5 run and grew their lead to 46-39 going into the fourth quarter.
Pomona-Pitzer was down but not out as the Sagehens came roaring back in the fourth quarter and took a 53-52 lead after a pair of Brulee-Wills free throws with 2:09 remaining in the game.
The Beavers were forced to foul and the Sagehens closed the game out at the free throw line for their third straight SCIAC win of the season.
The Sagehens next take the court on Tuesday, January 19th as Pomona-Pitzer travels to La Verne at 7:30 p.m.
