CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Occidental 48-44 on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Occidental was led by Ciara Byrne who tallied a game-high 12 points and collected seven rebounds. Erin Matsumoto chipped in with 11 points in the loss for the Tigers.
Occidental started the game out on top with a 9-3 run that forced Pomona-Pitzer to use its first timeout with 5:44 remaining in the first quarter.
The Sagehens came back to take the lead 15-14 at the 3:44 mark in the second quarter after sophomore Anya Quig buried a jump shot.
Pomona-Pitzer ended the half on an 8-2 run capped off by a freshman Melissa Hooke layup to go into the locker room with a 21-17 lead.
The Sagehens came out of the locker room and took their largest lead of the game at 32-22 with 5:59 left in the third quarter.
Occidental started to gain ground on the Sagehens and brought the lead down to 35-31 with 9:44 left in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers came back to reclaim the lead at 42-37 after a Matsumoto jump shot with 4:57 remaining.
The Sagehens came back and took the lead after senior Amelia Hummel cashed in on a free throw to give Pomona-Pitzer a 45-44 advantage.
Pomona-Pitzer stayed solid at the line and was able to hold off the Tigers for their fourth SCIAC win of the season.
The Sagehens next take the court on Thursday, January 28th for the first game of the sixth street showdown against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Voelkel Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
