CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team pulled out a win in double overtime against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent La Verne 86-73 on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Before the game, Pomona-Pitzer honored its head coach Kathy Connell as she coaches in her final two games at the head of the Sagehen program.
Junior Basha Brulee-Wills had a monster performance as she tallied a game-high 24 points and a career-high 22 rebounds. Junior Alaina Woo was the Sagehens second leading scorer as she collected 17 points.
La Verne was led by Noelle Cobb who tallied 14 points in the loss to Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens had the hot hands early on and played solid defense in the first quarter as they took a 15-8 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead in the second quarter to 30-17 after sophomore Cassandra Palmer made two free throws with 4:07 left until halftime.
The Sagehens maintained their lead going into the locker room as they held a 37-23 lead over the Leopards.
La Verne came out in the second half and had a big third quarter as they outscored Pomona-Pitzer 23-11 and cut the Sagehens' lead down to just two points at 48-46 heading into the fourth.
The game got very interesting down the stretch as senior Amelia Hummel hit a jump shot with 39 seconds remaining to give the Sagehens a three point lead.
The Leopards came down and Bailey Kurahashi nailed a three-point shot to force overtime.
The first overtime was a close battle with La Verne having a one point lead with 36 seconds remaining. Pomona-Pitzer came down the floor and freshman Melissa Hooke got a good look at a three pointer and connected to give the Sagehens a two point lead.
Woo had a chance to put La Verne away with two shots at the free throw line but only connected on one as the Sagehens held a three point lead with five seconds left.
Kurahashi came down and drilled a deep three pointer with just seconds remaining as the Leopards forced a second overtime.
The second overtime was all Pomona-Pitzer as the Leopards had four players foul out over the overtime periods and ran out of depth on the court. The Sagehens outscored the Leopards 15-2 in the second overtime and Pomona-Pitzer won a thriller at Voelkel Gymnasium.
The Sagehens next take the court in their last game of the season as they host Caltech on Tuesday, February 23rd at 7:30 p.m.
