CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell in their home opener to Bethesda University 76-68 on Tuesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
The Sagehens were led by senior Alaina Woo who tallied a game-high 24 points and was a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Anita Romero put together a double-double for the Sagehens as she scored 22 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
The Flames were led by Ifeoma Okaro who came off the bench to lead Bethesda with 14 points. Taylor Smalley and Estela Gutierrez chipped in with 13 points each.
Bethesda was able to control the first half in the paint and on the offensive boards as they out-rebounded the Sagehens 53-37 for the game and converted on 19 second chance points opposed to Pomona-Pitzer who only had five.
The Flames got out to a hot start in the first as they outscored the Sagehens 21-15 in the first quarter and extended their lead to 36-26 at the half.
Bethesda came out in the third quarter and reached its largest lead of the game at 17 points with 1:44 remaining in the period.
After the Flames took their 17-point lead, Pomona-Pitzer outscored Bethesda 30-15 to cut the lead down to just two points at 70-68 after a Kacie Hitomi jump shot with just 1:49 remaining.
Bethesda answered with a jump shot of their own on the ensuing possession and played solid defense down the stretch to hold off the Sagehens' comeback and hang on for their first win of the season.
