SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell in game two of the UCSC Holiday Classic to UC Santa Cruz 78-60 at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, Pomona-Pitzer drops to 0-8 this season while the Banana Slugs improve to 3-4. UC Santa Cruz and Pomona-Pitzer met earlier in the season in the annual David Wells Class as the Banana Slugs also got the better of the Sagehens, 83-55.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by senior Alaina Woo who had a game-high 20 points for the Sagehens in the loss. Sophomore Anita Romero had the second highest point total with 16 and sophomore Keilani Ikehara chipped in with 14.
The Banana Slugs were led by Tyler Stewart who posted a team-high 15 points in the loss.
The Sagehens and Banana Slugs played an even statistical game but the difference came on the boards as UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Pomona-Pitzer 51-32 throughout the game.
The Banana Slugs got out to an early lead as they jumped out to a 16-6 run to start the first quarter. UC Santa Cruz had a hot start on offense as they put up 27 points in the first quarter and finished with a 27-17 lead.
The Sagehens came back and chipped away at the lead as they outscored the Banana Slugs 13-11 in the second quarter and only trailed 38-20 at the half.
UC Santa Cruz came out and controlled the second half as they held the Sagehen offense to just 23.1% from the field In the third quarter as they outscored the Sagehens 15-9 and held a 53-39 lead heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens fought back in the fourth as they posted 21 points in the quarter but the early UC Santa Cruz lead was too much to overcome.
