WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier 78-54 on Wednesday night.
Season impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 0-16 overall and 0-8 in SCIAC play while Whittier improves to 5-13 overall and 4-5 in conference play this season.
The Poets were led by the pair of Cali Cubel and Emilee Dy who each tallied a game-high 20 points in the win. Ana Youngblood contributed a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Daniza Rodriguez tallied 10 points.
The Sagehens got out to a nice start in the first half against the Poets as they jumped out to a slight lead at 7-5 after an Ikehara three-pointer with 6:45 left in the first quarter. Whittier came back with some consecutive successful offensive possessions to reclaim the lead but the Sagehens stayed within striking distance as they only trailed 17-16 heading into the second quarter.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out with four straight points to open up the second quarter to take a 20-17 lead but once again the Poets responded and controlled the lead for the reminder of the quarter and held a 38-31 lead over the Sagehens at halftime.
The Sagehens made a run earlier in the third quarter to cut it down to just a three point game at 44-41 but the Poets offense exploded on a 17-2 run to end the quarter and led 61-43 heading into the fourth.
The Whittier run in the third quarter proved to be the difference as the Sagehens failed to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter and fell to the Poets on the road.
