Women's Basketball: Grit and Tenacity Puts Sagehens Past Regals

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team hung on for a strong victory over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Cal Lutheran, showcasing their grit and defense to win 49-43. The Sagehens held the Regals to 23.7 percent from the field, collected four blocks and five steals, and out-rebounded the Regals 47 to 33.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 3-10 record overall and a 1-4 record in the SCIAC.

Renae Tamura led the Sagehens with 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Keilani Ikehara added 15 points and collected three steals. Anita Romero had her seventh double-digit rebound performance of the season, pulling down 17 boards, and swatted two shots.

After a slow start halfway through the first quarter, the Sagehens found their steam after Romero pulled up for a difficult baseline jumper off a pass from Naomi Baer to spark a 5-0 run. A jumper from Alexa Bayangos and a free throw from Ikehara put the Hens ahead 14-8 at the end of the quarter.

Tamura put on a fine scoring display in the second quarter, forcing a turnover and getting a fast break layup to open the quarter. Later with 7:14 remaining in the half, Tamura received the ball in the paint and showed some nifty work, shaking off her defender with a pump fake and two pivots for an easy layup, extending the lead 21-10. Later, Tamura split through two defenders on the dribble and drove for an open layup to make it 25-11. With 2:43 remaining in the half, Tamura sparked a 6-0 run with a jumper as the Hens extended to a 33-13 lead. The Regals tried to rally back and cut the deficit 34-21 at halftime.

Both teams struggled out of the gate in the third quarter, holding each other scoreless in the opening three minutes. Ikehara found the cutting Tamura for a layup to break the drought, but the Regals responded with an and-one layup from Taylor Oshiro. The Hens locked it down on defense in the third quarter, allowing only three field goals from the Regals as they held a 40-30 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Regals nearly cut the game close, chipping away with a 7-0 run to cut the score 44-40, bringing the Hens' lead to only four points. Later with 1:18 left in the game, Tamura attempted a layup and Romero leapt through traffic to grab the offensive board. Romero went back up for the put-back, but her shot bounced off the iron and slipped through several Regals' hands on the rebound attempt. Anya Quig outhustled the Regals for the loose ball and secured the rebound with 47 seconds left, leaving the Regals with no option but to foul in order to save clock. The Sagehens did enough to secure the victory, ending the game 49-43.

Up Next: The Sagehens will host SCIAC opponent University of Redlands on Monday, January 8 at 7:00 PM.
