Women's Basketball: Hens' Defense Force 17 Turnovers In Tight Loss to Redlands

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball Team took a close loss to the University of Redlands on Monday night, falling to the Bulldogs 67-63. Despite demonstrating tenacious defense, forcing the Bulldogs to 17 turnovers, the Sagehens could not complete the comeback in the fourth quarter to steal the victory.

Season Impact: The Sagehens fall to a 3-11 record overall and hold a 1-5 record in SCIAC play.

Alexa Bayangos co-led the Sagehens in scoring alongside Emma Godfrey with 16 points. Godfrey also led with eight rebounds off the bench. Renae Tamura scored 10 points while delivering a season-high six assists. Cassandra Lacey led the Bulldogs with 17 points while Reyna Ta'amu had 14 points with seven rebounds.

The Bulldogs' offense found rhythm early in the first quarter, jumping to a 7-0 lead. However, the Sagehens responded by attacking the paint with three straight layups to get back in the game. After the Bulldogs went up 11-6, Emma Godfrey came into the game and made her impact felt, hitting a close-range jumper with 3:00 left to cut the lead 11-8. She later brought the Hens within one with another jump shot. However, Redlands ended the quarter with a 15-10 advantage.

Tamura got the offense going in the second quarter, freezing her defender with a slight hesitation from the top of the key and driving in for a layup to cut the deficit 17-12. Trailing 19-16 with 5:18 left in the half, Keilani Ikehara threaded a pass from the top of the key between two defenders to the cutting Godfrey for an easy basket to bring the Hens within one. Ikehara followed up with one of her best sequences in the game, starting with a bank shot off a pass from Anita Romero. Ikehara then blocked a jump shot attempt and forced the turnover on a shot clock violation, followed by a three-point jumper to tie the game at 25 apiece. The two teams went to halftime tied at 27.

Halfway through the third quarter, Bayangos converted from beyond the arc off a pass from Tamura to help the Hens to a 41-39 lead. However, the Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run to retake the advantage. With 50 seconds left, Ikehara drove into the lane and spun around her defender for a layup to cut the Bulldogs' lead 50-45.

In the fourth quarter, Redlands managed to hold onto their lead as the Sagehens tried to even the score. Down 59-52, Tamura bursted to the rim for a layup followed by a layup from Romero. Trailing by three, Tamura launched a midrange jumper and saw her shot bounce off the front of the rim. She quickly leapt forward to grab her own rebound and put up another jumper to bring the Hens within one. However, the Bulldogs cut the rally short with a three-pointer from Allison Siksnus, leaving the Hens no choice but to foul on the following possessions to save clock. The Bulldogs held on for the 67-63 win at the buzzer.
