CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team triumphed with a key road victory over Caltech on Wednesday night, defeating them 61-52. The Sagehens dominated the Beavers in rebounds 41 to 33 thanks in part to Emma Godfrey and Anita Romero, who both recorded a double-double, the third time such occurrence has happened this season. Pomona-Pitzer was also efficient from the floor, shooting 45.1 percent while holding the Beavers to 34.8.
Season Impact: The victory helps the Sagehens improve to a 6-14 record overall and 3-8 in the SCIAC.
Godfrey recorded her third straight double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Anita Romero added 10 points, 11 boards, and a block. Renae Tamura also had a solid shooting night, scoring 15 points and going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. The Beavers were led by Grace Peng who had 22 points while Samantha D'Costa added 14 points with seven rebounds.
The Sagehens found themselves trailing early in the first quarter 7-2, but with 5:55 remaining in the period, Alexa Bayangos sparked a huge 12-0 run with a three-pointer off a pass from Keilani Ikeahara. Bayangos capped the run with another triple to make it 14-7. With 2:26 left, D'Costa stopped the bleeding with a layup to make it 14-9, but the Sagehens were determined to maintain the lead. The Hens closed the first quarter with 17-12 lead.
The Beavers opened the second quarter by climbing within one point, but Godfrey responded by leading the Hens on another 12-0 run, scoring six points during the stretch while Tamura and Bayangos each scored a triple. The Hens led 31-23 at halftime.
Caltech managed to slow down the Sagehens' offense in the start of the third quarter, while they chipped away into the deficit thanks to some timely jumpers. With 3:40 remaining, the Beavers cut the deficit to four points after a layup from Lauren Suezaki. The Hens led 41-37 as they headed into the final period.
The fourth quarter did not start favorably for the Hens as Caltech managed to climb back to a 43-41 lead, but with 5:39 remaining, a jumper by Romero helped the Sagehens find their groove on offense. Ikehara followed with a layup and Godfrey later hit two free throws and a jumper build a 51-45 lead. Tamura scored a three-pointer off a pass from Bayangos and Romero closed out the rally with a jumper and two free throws as the Hens led 58-45 with 1:06 left in the game. The Hens closed out the game for the much-needed road victory.
