CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental 70-63 on Saturday Night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens end the year with an 8-17 overall record and 5-11 in SCIAC play.
Before the start of the game, the Sagehens honored its one senior in Anya Quig. Quig, a captain this season, has played in 77 games, and scored 223 points. She grabbed 171 rebounds and dished out 96 assists over the course of her career.
The Sagehens were led by Emma Godfrey who tallied a game-high 30 points and nine rebounds In the win. This marks the sixth time Godfrey has notched at least 30 points in a game. Keilani Ikehara chipped in with 17 points and six assists while Anita Romero added 10 points.
The Sagehens came out on fire out of the gate as they shot 45% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc in the first quarter. Occidental kept it close early as the Sagehens led 12-7 with 4:45 remaining but the Sagehens ended the quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 22-11 lead.
Both teams went back and forth in the second quarter but the Tigers couldn't gain any ground on the Sagehens with both teams scoring 13 points as Pomona-Pitzer went into halftime with a 35-24 lead.
The Sagehens shot a game-high 53.8% in the third quarter as they came out and extended their lead over the Tigers in the third quarter. Pomona-Pitzer took their largest lead of the game at 21 points as they led 52-31 to end the third quarter.
Down by their largest margin of the game, the Tigers scored 30 points in the quarter to try and climb back into the game. Occidental slowly began to chip away at the Sagehens' lead and even got the deficit down to just six points at 67-61, but the lead was too much for the Tigers to overcome as the Sagehens held on for the win on Senior Day.
