Women's Basketball: Sagehens Win Fourth Straight With 81-56 Victory Over Caltech

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Caltech 81-56 on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens open up SCIAC play with two-straight wins to improve to 2-0 on the year and 5-2 overall.

The Sagehens were led by freshman Cameron Edward who notched a career-high 15 points coming off of the bench and 3-6 from beyond the arc. Three Sagehen freshman reached double-digit scoring numbers with Edwards' 15, and freshman Kamil English notched 12 points and freshman Carly Leong chipped in with 12 as well.

Pomona-Pitzer shot a solid 41.9% from the field while holding the Beavers to just 33.3%. The Sagehens also controlled the paint as they outrebounded the Beavers 39-29 and had 32 points in the paint while Caltech only came away with 12.

The Sagehens' bench showed up to play against the Beavers as the bench players outscored the starters for Pomona-Pitzer 45-36.

Caltech started out the first quarter with an early lead as they hit two three pointers early to take an 8-4 lead with 5:38 left in the quarter. The Sagehens regrouped and responded with a big run to end the first up 21-15 after a freshman Madison Quan layup.

The Sagehens took over in the second quarter and eventually grew their lead to 10 points after a sophomore Renae Tamura layup put them up 33-23 with 2:29 left before halftime. Pomona-Pitzer added one with a 7-2 run to end the half and held a 40-25 lead at the break.

Pomona-Pitzer came out of the locker room and put together its best quarter of the game as they outscored the Beavers 25-14. Edward led the charge in the third quarter for the Sagehens with eight of her 15 in the third quarter alone. The team shot 61.5% from the floor and 66.7% from three as the Sagehens held a large 65-39 lead heading into the fourth.

The Sagehens were able to take their feet off of the gas in the fourth quarter as they rode their large lead and improved their win streak to four games with the win over the Beavers.
