CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team came away with a win on Senior Night 62-56 on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 18-5 overall and 12-2 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led by first-year Amara Chidom who notched a game-high 16 points off of the bench to go along with 10 rebounds for her third career double-double. First-year Carly Leong had 15 points off of the bench as well while sophomore Renae Tamura had 11 points and seven rebounds while first-year Cameron Edward had 10 points and five rebounds and Ikehara tallied eight points and six steals.
The Sagehens hire powered offense struggled against the Regals as they held Pomona-Pitzer to 34.3% from the field and just 18.8% from beyond the arc. The Sagehens made up for it with their hustle as they outrebounded the Regals 48-38 and forced 16 turnovers on defense while converting 17 points off of turnovers.
A slow start to the offense for both teams with four combined points just over four minutes into the game. The Sagehens started growing a lead after a Leong three gave them a 12-7 lead with 3:21 left in the first, but the Regals came fighting back and ended the quarter with six of the last eight points to cut the Sagehens' lead down to one point at 14-13 heading into the second.
The second quarter belonged to the Regals as they outscored the Sagehens 16-11, the only quarter in which they outscored Pomona-Pitzer. Cal Lutheran took the lead at 21-18 with 5:39 left in the first half and never gave it back as they went into halftime with a 29-25 lead over Pomona-Pitzer. Leong led the Sagehens at the half with nine points.
The Sagehens made up ground and then some in the third quarter as they outscored Cal Lutheran 20-13. A big quarter from Chidom and Ikehara guided the Sagehens in regaining the lead as Chidom notched eight points in the third with Ikehara scoring six. Pomona-Pitzer immediately began to cut into the Regals' lead and eventually tied the game at 36-36 after a Tamura jumper with 6:37 left in the third. The Regals responded and quickly retook the lead, but the Sagehens shut down Cal Lutheran in the final five minutes of the quarter and went on a 7-0 run to take a 45-42 lead heading into the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer held its lead in the fourth and extended it to the largest of the game at eight points after a Leong layup made the score 58-50 with 4:09 left to go. Cal Lutheran battled back late and got within striking distance after a made three-pointer cut the lead down to four points at 60-56 with 2:06 left in the game. A key steal by Ikehara set up Tamura for a break-away layup that sealed the game at 62-56 with 22 seconds remaining as the Sagehens locked up a big win on Senior Night over the Regals.
