LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team notched their first 20-win season since 1991-92 with a 78-59 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental on Saturday afternoon at Rush Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens reached 20 wins for just the seventh time in program history and improve to 20-5 overall and 13-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by first-year Madison Quan who had a career-high 20 points in the win shooting 8-10 from the field. First-year Kamil English came off of the bench with 16 points, first-year Carly Leong also notched 16 points to go along with six rebounds and first-year Cameron Edward was also in double digits with 13 points in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer had yet another impressive night shooting the basketball as the Sagehens added to their conference best field goal and three-point percentage shooting 41.5% from the field and 47.6% from beyond the arc.
Pomona-Pitzer also dominated the boards as they outrebounded the Tigers 47-29 and the Sagehen bench came away with 40 points while Occidental's bench only had nine.
The Sagehens and Leong got off to a hot start as they quickly mounted a 10-6 lead midway through the first quarter. The defense shut down the Tigers in the first as they only allowed 11 points while the offense put up 19 led by Leong with nine first quarter points to take a 19-11 lead.
Occidental came fighting back to open up the second quarter as they quickly trimmed the lead down to 23-20 with 7:28 left until halftime. Pomona-Pitzer responded and sparked an 8-2 run to widen its lead to 31-22 with just over four minutes in the half. The Sagehens were able to maintain their lead as they went into the locker room up 10 at half, 39-29. Quan and Leong both led the Sagehens at the midway point with 13 each.
Pomona-Pitzer's offense got hot in the third quarter as they shot 10-20 from the field and 3-6 from three for 50% overall. The Sagehens put up 25 points in the third quarter while holding Occidental to just 13 points to held widen their lead to 64-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Sagehens took their largest lead of the game early in the fourth as sophomore Renae Tamura hit a three to take a 25-point lead at 67-42 with 9:51 left to play. The Tigers outscored the Sagehens by three points in the fourth but the difference was too much to make up as the Sagehens notched their 20th win with a 19-point win over Occidental in their regular season finale.
