CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team capped off the 2019 David Wells Classic with a big 92-54 win over non-conference opponent Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens move to 2-4 on the year.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Amara Chidom who tallied a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Cameron Edward netted 14 points, sophomore Carly Leong notched 11 and sophomore Vanessa Hsia came off of the bench for 10 points in the win.
The Sagehens defense limited the Wolves to just 54 points and didn't allow more than 17 in any quarter. Pomona-Pitzer cause Nebraska Wesleyan to turn the ball over 22 times and converted 23 points off of those turnovers. The Sagehens also dominated down low as they outrebounded the Wolves 51-28 and had 50 points in the paint to Nebraska Wesleyan's 26.
The Wolves never led in the game at any point as the Sagehens started out hot with 26 points in the first quarter. Edward had the hot hand early as she accounted for the first seven points of the game for the Sagehens to jump out to an early 7-2 lead. Nebraska Wesleyan didn't keep it close for long as the Sagehens slowly pulled away throughout the first quarter and finished the first 10 minutes up 26-16.
The Sagehens poured it on in the second quarter as they outscored the Wolves 25-10. Pomona-Pitzer's defense made it difficult for the Wolves to get anything going on offense and ended the first half on a good run to take a 51-26 lead heading into halftime.
Nebraska Wesleyan had their best quarter of the game in the third but still couldn't keep up with the Sagehens' offense. Chidom got going down low with eight points in the quarter and junior Alexa Bayangos went unconscious from three as she hit three three-pointers on three consecutive possessions to give the Sagehens a 67-31 lead and forced the Wolves to take a timeout with 4:56 left in the third.
The Sagehens started the fourth quarter with a 75-43 lead and rode their lead throughout the fourth quarter to hang on with a big win to conclude the 2019 David Wells Classic.
