CLAREMONT, CA. – Senior Night could not have ended any better for the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team on Sunday, as they held off a late run by the University of Redlands for a 17-14 victory. Graduating senior Sal Marx scored a goal and notched an assist in her final regular season game at South Athletics Complex en route to the close win. The win solidifies the Sagehens' spot in the SCIAC Tournament, as they take the third seed.
Season Impact: The Sagehens now hold a 10-7 record overall and are 5-5 in the SCIAC.
Thomey got the Sagehens on board early, with a goal within the first minute of the match. Woo and Immergluck followed to give the Hens a quick 3-0 lead. After the Bulldogs scored their first goal of the match, courtesy of Kelsey Ruhl, Woo flicked a quick pass to the cutting Immergluck near the goal while running and Immergluck snapped a shot a close range to make it 4-1.
With 12:26 remaining and the Sagehens leading 5-3, Pomona-Pitzer broke out with a 7-0 run, including two consecutive goals by Lily Hermann and a nine second goal after a draw control by Woo to build a 12-3 lead. The Bulldogs scored twice within the final three minutes of the half to cut the deficit 12-5 at halftime.
Woo and Immergluck combined for a quick goal at the start of the second half. Paige Erlanger sparked the Bulldogs with a 4-1 run, during which she scored three to cut the lead 14-9. Later with 18:50 left on the clock and down one player, Thomey managed to score on a counterattack while down a player to extend the lead 15-9. Later with a 16-10 lead, Sal Marx flicked a quick pass from behind the goal to the cutting Sophie Hubbell for a goal to extend the advantage 17-10. The Bulldogs tried to fight back, rallying with four straight goals, but the Hens did enough to hold them off for the victory.
Up Next: The Sagehens will travel to Los Angeles to take on Occidental College on Saturday, April 28 for the SCIAC Semifinal.
