CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental 17-10 on Saturday afternoon at the South Athletics Complex.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens open up 2-0 on the year and 2-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by freshman Maggie Sweeney who tallied her first collegiate hat-trick with four goals in the win. Junior Sonia Olson and freshman Eleanor Mackey also had hat-tricks as they tallied three goals each. Junior Annie Price earned her second win of the season with eight saves in the win.
The Tigers started out against the Sagehens as they began the game with the opening three goals to take an early 3-0 lead. The Sagehens responded with five-straight goals to take the lead from Occidental. Senior Lilly Thomey got the scoring going for the Sagehens followed by back-to-back goals by Sweeney to tie the game at 3-3. Olson and Mackey followed with their first goals of the game to take a 5-3 lead with 11:44 left in the half. The Tigers answered with a goal but Pomona-Pitzer ended the half with a free position goal from Sweeney to take a 6-4 lead at the half.
Occidental opened the second half with two goal to tie the game back up at 6-6 but back-to-back goals from freshman Jessalyn Simon-Parker and sophomore Sarah Woo put the Sagehens back on top 8-6. The Tigers followed up with a goal to cut the lead down to one point at 8-7 but the Sagehens went on and blew the game wide open as they notched six-straight goals to double up the Tigers at 14-7.
Occidental tried to come back late in the second half but the Sagehens already pulled away too far for the Tigers to catch up as they held on for a win in their home opener.
