LAX: Sweeney Earns Newcomer Of The Year; Seven Sagehens Earn All-SCIAC

CLAREMONT, CA. –  Seven Sagehens earned Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) All-Conference honors highlighted by first-year Maggie Sweeney who earned SCIAC Newcomer of the Year as announced by the league office.

Pomona-Pitzer had five players earn First Team All-SCIAC with senior Lilly Thomey, sophomore Sarah Woo, senior Nicole Larson, sophomore Kiera Havill and Sweeney who also took home Newcomer of the Year honors. The Sagehens also had two players earn Second Team All-SCIAC with junior Annie Price and sophomore Lilly Herrmann

Sweeney cashed in 11 goals and nine assists (20 points) and registered an impressive 94.4 on-goal shooting percentage. She also picked up 15 ground balls, contributed 37 draw control wins, and caused nine opponent turnovers. 

Fellow midfielder Woo also earned First Team All-SCIAC this season and was the 2018 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year. Woo led the Sagehens with 50 points this season off of 33 goals and 17 assists.

Thomey led the goal scorers this season for the Sagehens and finished just behind Woo in points with 44.  Thomey found the net 41 times this season and added three assists as well.

Larson and Havill earned First Team All-SCIAC as defenders as they anchored a defense that gave up the second fewest goals in the SCIAC this season with 86. Larson tallied 24 ground balls this season and 20 caused turnovers while Havill had 42 ground balls and led the team with 33 caused turnovers. Havill also helped out on offense with 16 points off of eight goals and eight assists.

Price took Second Team All-SCIAC as a goalkeeper with an 8-3 record and tallied 89 saves with a 50% save percentage. Rounding out the awards for the Sagehens was Herrmann who picked up Second Team All-SCIAC honors as a midfielder. Herrmann tallied 31 points this season from 21 goals and 10 assists.

The Sagehens earned a second place finish in the SCIAC this season and ended as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament where they will host the No. 3 seeded Occidental Tigers on Wednesday, May 1st at 7:00 p.m.
