Claremont, Calif. - Junior midfielder Claudia Zaugg (San Diego, Calif.) had a pair of first half goals as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team coasted to a 3-0 win over La Verne in a SCIAC contest on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-4 on the year and 5-3 in the SCIAC, remaining in a tie for second place. La Verne slips to 2-8-3 overall and 1-7 in conference play. The eight wins for Pomona-Pitzer already exceed last season's win total of seven.

Senior forward Traci Lopez (Sante Fe, N.M.) started the scoring with her team-high ninth goal of the season at the 11:07 mark. Freshman midfielder Sam Thompson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) set her up with a long through ball up the middle that put Lopez in alone behind the defense. Lopez took two dribbles to measure her angle, and then tucked a low shot into the side netting inside the left post.

"I think the biggest challenge for us coming in was that it was our third game in five days and the weather conditions were not ideal with the heat," said head coach Jen Scanlon. "I think we did a really good job of coming out focused and taking control of the game early, which took some of the pressure off and allowed us to rotate in fresh players."

Zaugg then netted the first of her two goals at the 22:52 mark when she scored an opportunistic goal by following the play. Sophomore midfielder Allie Tao (Alamo, Calif.) had the ball inside the box with her back to goal, when she turned over her right shoulder past a La Verne defender. She got a clean look, but her shot deflected off the near post and rolled back through the goalmouth. Zaugg's hustle proved fruitful, as she sped in past the La Verne defense from the weak side and scored into the empty net.

Sophomore forward Lilli Barrett-O'Keefe (Evanston, Ill.) then set up Zaugg's second goal by turning the corner along the right end line. She sent a low cross out of the reach of Leopards goalie Delanie Pacheco, and it found Zaugg open at the top of the six-yard box, where she had no trouble finishing at the 31:15 mark to stretch the lead to 3-0.

"The nice thing about having good depth is that you can put players in off the bench who can contribute with quality minutes," said Scanlon. "And it was nice to see some of their hard work rewarded. Claudia was able to get us two goals just through hustle and hard work. She was in the right place at the right time, but only because she hustled to get there."

The Sagehens outshot La Verne 12-2 in the first half on their way to the big halftime lead and finished with an 18-6 edge. Sophomore goalkeepers Emma Wolfarth (Arlington, Va.) and Jana London (Chevy Chase, Md.) combined for the shutout, as Wolfarth had one save in the first half and London had two in the second. Pacheco had fives saves for the Leopards in the losing cause.

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it travels to face local rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest.
