Late Free Kick Gives Biola 1-0 Win Over Sagehens

La Mirada, Calif. - Katie Cabuling scored on a free kick in the 72nd minute to lead the Biola Women's Soccer team to a 1-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening.

Both teams see their records move to .500 on the year, as the Sagehens drop to 1-1 after an opening day 4-1 win over Marian (Wis.) while Biola improves to 2-2.

Neither team had many good chances in the first half, although freshman goalie Annie Wedel (Trabuco Canyon, Calif. - pictured) was called on to make a spectacular save diving to her right to push a ball over the end line for a corner kick.

The Sagehens had a couple of quality chances in the second half, as junior forward Allie Tao (Alamo, Calif.) was denied from 15 yards out in the 69th minute by goalie Briana Williams, moments after the Biola defense caught the Sagehens from behind to stop a breakaway at the top of the 18-yard box.

The momentum didn't last, though, as Cabuling took a free kick after a Pomona-Pitzer foul 25 yards from goal and bent a shot over the wall and inside the left post for her second goal of the year with 18:31 remaining in regulation.

Biola finished with a 10-4 edge in shots on the day, as Wedel was called on to make two saves and Williams one for the Eagles to get the shutout.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday, when it opens SCIAC play with a road game at CMS.
