Pomona-Pitzer Plays To Scoreless Tie With Occidental

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team played to a 0-0 tie with Occidental on Saturday morning.

The shutout was the second in a row for the Sagehens and their senior-laden defensive unit, which was honored before the game for Senior Day. Pomona-Pitzer moves to 6-6-2 overall and 5-5-2 in the SCIAC with the tie, while Occidental moves to 4-9-1 overall and 3-8-1 in the SCIAC.

The four seniors honored before the gamem (pictured) included starting defenders Jordan Bryant (Pomona, Calif.), Claire Mueller (Lincoln, Neb.) and Anika Burrell (Ridgefield, Wash.), as well as forward Claudia Zaugg (San Diego, Calif.).

The game was a defensive struggle, as neither team had many quality chances over the entire 110 minutes. Freshman goalie Helena Epps (Santa Cruz, Calif.) had three saves for the Sagehens to get her second straight shutout, while Tayler Renshaw had four for Occidental.

Pomona-Pitzer's best chance came midway through the first overtime as junior forward Allie Tao (Alamo, Calif.) got to a loose ball in the box and missed just wide of the right post from 12 yards out. The Sagehens also almost ended the game with heavy drama as junior midfielder Sarah Ach (San Francisco, Calif.) got loose for a breakaway with five seconds left in the second overtime, but was flagged for offsides.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday against Redlands as it tries to battle for one of the four spots in the SCIAC Tournament. Redlands is in third place with a one-game lead on the Sagehens coming into the day, and plays La Verne this evening, while Chapman is in fourth place (one-half game ahead of Pomona-Pitzer and is at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps).
