Women's Soccer Takes SCIAC Opener, Defeats La Verne

Claremont, Calif. - Danika Bethune scored in the 55th minute to give the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team a 1-0 win over La Verne in the SCIAC opener for both teams on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Sagehens remain unbeaten and improve to 3-0-1 on the year. La Verne falls to 3-4 overall with the loss.

The game-winning goal was set up early in the second half, as junior midfielder Nicole Quilliam got the ball in Pomona-Pitzer's offensive half. She played a diagonal pass to the right side that slipped by one Sagehen, but Bethune was making a run behind the play and got to the ball first, continuing on for a breakaway. She dribbled inside the penalty area and drew La Verne goalie Delanie Pacheco off her line, before firing a high shot under the crossbar.

Pomona-Pitzer then used its depth to dominate the second half, outshooting La Verne 20-2 after intermission (and 28-5 for the game). Pacheco had 14 saves (11 in the second half) to keep the game close, but the Leopards were unable to find an equalizer. Sophomore goalkeeper Annie Wedel had four saves in 75 minutes, but wasn't seriously tested, while freshman Corey Goelz played the final 15 minutes and did not have to make a save.

Senior Allie Tao took seven shots to lead all players, including one midway through the second half that hit off the crossbar, while Quilliam took five.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday, when it hosts Occidental for an 11 a.m. contest.
