Sagehens Dominate Whittier, Settle For 1-0 Win

Claremont, Calif. - Freshman forward Agueda Dudley-Berrios (pictured) scored in the seventh minute for the game's only goal as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team took a 1-0 win over Whittier on Wednesday.

Pomona-Pitzer outshot the Poets 28-5, but Alexi Cruz had 14 saves for Whittier to give her team a chance. However, the Sagehens were able to make the early goal stand up as they improve to 6-1-1 overall and maintain their share of first place in the SCIAC at 4-1 (tying them with Cal Lutheran). Whittier slips to 0-10 overall and 0-5 in the SCIAC.

Dudley-Berrios scored on Pomona-Pitzer's second shot of the game, knocking in a cross from fellow freshman Danika Bethune at the 6:50 mark of the first half. From there, the Sagehens were able to pin Whittier back and continually test Cruz, who had 11 saves in the second half alone.

Freshman Jamie Kerester came the closest to giving Pomona-Pitzer an insurance goal, but she hit the post with just over 20 minutes left in regulation.

Sophomore Annie Wedel had four saves to get the shutout for the Sagehens, including two in the final 10 minutes off the foot of All-SCIAC midfielder Madison Shipherd.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Saturday for a road game at Redlands, beginning at 1 p.m.
