Women's Soccer Earns 2-0 Win Over San Diego Christian

Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Abby Onderwyzer Gold scored in the eighth minute which held up as the game-winner as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team took a 2-0 win over San Diego Christian in 100-degree weather on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Sagehens move to 2-2 on the year, while San Diego Christian falls to 1-2-1 with the loss.

Onderwyzer Gold's second career tally came after senior midfielder Nicole Quilliam put her in alone with a well-placed through ball. Onderwyzer Gold took one quick dribble and then tucked a shot under the dive of onrushing Hawks goalie Katherine Koury.

San Diego Christian nearly had the equalizer midway through the first half, but freshman defender Lindsay Piwinski (pictured), who had just checked into the game moments earlier, headed a sure goal off the line on a 15-yard blast from Ashley Jarosin with Sagehen keeper Annie Wedel out of her net.

Wedel also came up big with diving saves at full extension once in each half, while stopping a breakaway from Vivian Oray in the second half. The Sagehens nearly had an insurance goal a few times as well, including a shot off the post from sophomore forward Danika Bethune.

The insurance goal finally came with 15 minutes left on an own goal as the San Diego Christian defense misplayed a cross and deflected the ball backwards and up in the air into its own net.

Wedel finished with three saves to get the shutout for Pomona-Pitzer, which held a 17-10 edge in shots on the day. The Sagehens will be back in action on Wednesday when they open SCIAC play with a 4 p.m. contest against La Verne.
