Kerester's Goal Holds Up, Sagehens Take Road Win At Occidental

Los Angeles, Calif. - Sophomore defender Jamie Kerester (pictured) scored in the closing minutes of the first half and Annie Wedel had six saves as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Occidental on Wednesday evening in an early-season battle of SCIAC unbeatens.

The win was the fourth in a row for Pomona-Pitzer, which improves to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Occidental suffers its first loss of the year, falling to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Kerester's goal was unassisted and came with just 1:43 left in the opening half to give the Sagehens the momentum heading into the locker room.  Wedel had two saves in the final five minutes of the first half to keep the game scoreless, before Kerester was able to net the go ahead goal at the other end.

The second half saw Pomona-Pitzer content to protect its lead, as Wedel needed to make only one save after halftime. Occidental finished with a 13-7 edge in shots for the contest, while corner kicks were even at three apiece.

The Sagehens return to action with another road contest this weekend, traveling to face defending conference champion Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m.
