Late Goal Helps Sagehens Earn Tie At Cal Lutheran

Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Abby Onderwyzer Gold (pictured) scored in the 85th minute to enable the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team to earn a 1-1 tie on the road at defending SCIAC champion Cal Lutheran on Saturday.

The tie keeps the Sagehens unbeaten in league play, as they move to 5-2-1 overall and 3-0-1 in conference. Cal Lutheran moves to 3-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the SCIAC.

The tying goal was a long-range blast from outside the box into the upper-right corner with 5:33 left in the contest, assisted by fellow freshman Sofia Barsher. That negated a first half goal at the 25:01 mark from Kali Youngdahl, who gave the Regals the 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens had the best chance in overtime, as Barsher turned on an extra gear of speed and got behind the Cal Lutheran defense along the right side, but her breakaway attempt rolled inches wide of the far post.

The second overtime saw the Sagehens withstand some late pressure, as Cal Lutheran had a direct kick and a pair of corner kicks in the final two minutes, but the defense held tough as the Sagehens were able to earn the road point.

Junior Annie Wedel finished with three saves in goal for Pomona-Pitzer, while Kristin Bailey had five saves for Cal Lutheran in an evenly-played match (the Sagehens had a 14-13 edge in shots).

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Chapman for a 4 p.m. contest.
