CMS Hands Sagehens First SCIAC Loss

Claremont, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Women's Soccer team scored a pair of first half goals and added a third in the first minute of the second half to take a 3-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday evening. 

The loss was the first of the year in the SCIAC for the Sagehens, who fall to 5-1-1 in conference play (7-3-1 overall). CMS takes over first place in the conference standings with the win (6-1). 

Makella Brems scored the first goal for the Athenas in the 17th minute after a long ball from Elizabeth Augustine. Brems then assisted on the the second goal in the 24th minute, finding Sydney Smith inside the box, who put a line drive past the dive of Sagehen goalie Annie Wedel.

Pomona-Pitzer nearly cut the lead to 2-1 just under 10 minutes later, but sophomore Katie Tao took a free kick from five yards outside the box that clanged off the crossbar and stayed out.

Smith then put a cross in front that was finished by Darrah Shields just 36 seconds into the second half to stretch the lead to 3-0.

The Sagehens will look to bounce back from the loss with a non-conference home game against UC Santa Cruz on Friday at 4 p.m., followed by a road SCIAC game at La Verne on Saturday at 7 p.m.
