Second Half Surge Pushes Regals Past Hens 3-1

THOUSAND OAKS, CA: Two early second half goals by Cal Lutheran spelled doom for Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday night as the Regals handed the Sagehens their third consecutive SCIAC road loss 3-1.

With SCIAC Tournament hopes on the line and the score knotted up at 1-1 at half, Cal Lutheran (7-8-2, 6-5-2 SCIAC) raced out of the gates in the second half, netting the game winner less than 90 seconds in en route to a 3-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens (9-8, 7-6 SCIAC), sporting a 1-4 record in SCIAC road matches entering tonight's match, were unable to change their luck on the road this season and against the Regals at Rolland Stadium where they last won in 2009.

Cal Lutheran found their way on the board only seven minutes into the match as Kali Youngdahl buried a cross from Raquel Weckhurst to give the Regals an early 1-0 lead. Pomona-Pitzer would net the equalizer in the 23rd minute with Natasha Thornton-Clark collecting her first goal of the season off an Alyssa Kim pass but it was the last time the Sagehens would find the back of the net on the evening. Goals in the 46' and 64' as well as four big second half saves proved to be the difference for Cal Lutheran en route to moving into a tie for 4th place in the SCIAC.

Pomona-Pitzer would outshoot Cal Lutheran 9-8 on shots on goal, all coming from different players, but the road offensive woes continued for the Sagehens tonight where they've only scored two goals in six SCIAC matches. Remaining in 3rd place in the SCIAC but only now one point ahead of 4th place Cal Lutheran and Whittier at 21, Saturday's match at 8th place Chapman will be for all the marbles.

"First off, I think you have to tip your cap to Cal Lutheran for how they came out and competed tonight" said head coach Jen Scanlon. "At the end of the day, it all comes down to execution, discipline, and intensity and I felt that we just didn't get the job done like we needed to tonight. Thankfully, we're still in the SCIAC hunt and we just need to prepare to take care of business on Saturday."

Saturday's match against Chapman will be an 11am kickoff and live coverage will be provided for it on the Pomona-Pitzer Athletics Website.
