CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 8-7-3 overall and 5-5-3 in SCIAC play this season.
The Sagehens looked for a win against the conference leading Regals at home after they suffered a 1-0 loss in their last matchup with Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks but the Regals wouldn't make it easy on the Sagehens as they quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
Cal Lutheran took the ball from the midfield start and immediately launched an attack at the Sagehens' defense with Kali Youngdahl able to break in from the left side of the Pomona-Pitzer defense and placed a ball in the bottom corner of the goal to give the Regals the lead just 36 seconds into the match.
After giving up the early goal, the Sagehens regrouped and searched for an equalizer in the first half. The Pomona-Pitzer offense tallied two shots on goal in the first half but consistently had the ball in the Regals' defensive zone as they attempted seven corner kicks in the first half alone.
The equalizer finally came for the Sagehens in the second half as they were working the ball down the right side of the field when Thornton-Clark spotted Onderwyzer Gold sitting just outside of the box. Onderwyzer Gold was able to take the pass and take one step and sent a curler over the Cal Lutheran goalkeeper to even the score at 1-1 in the 61st minute.
The Regals found their game-winning goal just 20 minutes later after a counter attacked by Cal Lutheran left Youngdahl running through the middle of the box as a cross found her and gave the Regals a 2-1 lead in the 80th minute.
The Sagehens attempted a comeback late in the game but the Regals defense stayed solid as the Sagehens fell at home.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next host Occidental for their Senior Day on Saturday, October 28th at 11:00 a.m.
