CLAREMONT, CA. – Junior Bria VarnBuhler started off 2018 with a hat-trick as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team exploded for six goals in a 6-1 win over North Central College on Friday afternoon.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens begin 2018 with a win and move to 1-0 on the year.
The Sagehens were led by VarnBuhler who netted three goals for the hat-trick in her opening game of 2018. Anna Ponzio and Helena Robinowitz netted their first career goals and senior Sarah Jones headed in her first goal of 2018 in the win.
The Sagehens wasted no time finding the back of the net as VarnBuhler struck in the third minute of the match off of a cross from sophomore Chloe Hamer to go up 1-0.
Pomona-Pitzer struck just five minutes later as Hamer cross in another beautiful ball that found the foot of Ponzio to double the Sagehens' lead at 2-0.
VarnBuhler added her second goal of the game in the 30th minute as she settled a ball in the box and found the back of the net followed by Robinowitz who took a through ball from freshman Ciannah Correa and slotted it in the bottom of the goal to give the Sagehens a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.
VarnGuhler completed her hat-trick in the 54th minute to put the Sagehens up 5-0 but the Cardinals got one back in the 75th as Aly Crum lofted a ball over the goal keeper's head to cut the lead down to 5-1.
The Sagehens ended their goal parade as Sarah Jones twirled in the box and headed in a corner from junior Brianna Lau to cap off an incredible offensive performance in game one as the Sagehens took the 6-1 victory.
