Women's Soccer: Sagehens Open Up SCIAC Play With 8-0 Win Over Caltech

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play with a huge 8-0 win over Caltech on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-0 on the year and opened up conference play with a win.

The Sagehens were led by freshman Anna Ponzio who led the way with two goals. The Sagehens had six other players find the back of the net in junior Bria VarnBuhler, senior Peri Cuppens, junior Brianna Lau, sophomore Chloe Hamer and freshmen Emily Tomz and Maya Nitschke-Alonso.

Goalkeeper junior Isa Berardo got the win and moved to 3-0 on the year. Berardo tallied one save in 45 minutes of play while sophomore Kendall Shein came on for the second half.

The Sagehens wasted no time by getting two goals in the first 10 minutes of play. Cuppens got the scoring going off of an assist from Lau while Lau struck just four minutes later as Cuppens returned the favor with an assist to take a 2-0 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer added one more to its total before half as Nitschke-Alonso scored her first career goal off of an assist from junior Megan Kuo to push its lead to 3-0 before halftime.

Tomz opened up the second half with a goal in the 52nd minute off of an assist from freshman Ciannah Correa to extend the lead to 4-0 and the Sagehens then exploded for three goals in six minutes from VarnBuhler and back-to-back goals from Ponzio to take a 7-0 lead in the 65th minute.

The Sagehens capped off the game as freshman Kirsten Housen played a cross into Hamer who found the back to end the goal parade as Pomona-Pitzer opened up conference play with a bang.
