CLAREMONT, CA. – Freshman Anna Ponzio notched the only goal of the game as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Sagehens also hand Cal Lutheran its first loss of 2018.
The Sagehens were led by Ponzio who had the only goal of the game in the win. Junior Isa Berardo got the win in goal for the Sagehens as they tallied their first solo clean sheet of 2018 to go along with three saves on the day.
The Sagehens' offense was clicking during the first half against the Regals as early chances led to some good opportunities to score for Pomona-Pitzer. Ponzio put the Sagehens on top in the 16th minute as she dribbled past multiple Regal defenders and curled in a wonder goal from the edge of the box that banked off of the outside post and found the back of the net.
Ponzio almost doubled up on her magic just five minutes later but this time was unlucky as another beauty struck the post but this time trickled back into play for the Regals' defense to clear.
Pomona-Pitzer outshot Cal Lutheran 7-3 in the first half and had three shots on goal as the Regals were fortunate to go into the half with one goal deficit.
Cal Lutheran came out much more aggressive in the second half but it was more of the same from the Sagehen defense. A unit that has only surrendered three goals in seven games lived up to its hype as they denied the Regals possession after possession.
A chance for Cal Lutheran to even up the score came late in the game at the 85th minute as Alexandra Fagerberg struck the crossbar but the ball bounced away from goal to preserve the tie.
The Regals tried to get another shot attempt on goal late in the second half but the Sagehens' defense was too strong as they came away with the 1-0 win.
Up Next: The Sagehens next travel to SCIAC opponent Whittier on Saturday, September 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
