REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Redlands 2-0 on Wednesday night at Farquhar Field.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by senior Peri Cuppens who played a role in both scoring plays with a goal and an assist. Junior Bria VarnBuhler netted the other goal for the Sagehens in the win. Junior Isa Berardo got the win in goal for the Sagehens with two saves for their seventh win and sixth shutout of the season.
The Bulldogs and Sagehens played a very even first half as neither team was able to jump ahead in the first 45 minutes. Redlands outshot the Sagehens 6-5 while both teams each had two shots on goal in the first half.
Pomona-Pitzer finally broke the tie in the 61st minute as VarnBuhler got her head on a cross from Cuppens that found the back of the net to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens doubled up their lead just four minutes later as Cuppens came back to score a goal of her own as she finished off a scramble in the box with a shot past the keeper to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Sagehens' defense kept Redlands out of the box in the second half as the Bulldogs only attempted three shots with only one of them on goal. The defense has only allowed one goal in its past seven games and just three goals total in nine matches.
