CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team punched their ticket to the 2018 SCIAC Postseason Tournament Championship game with a 4-0 win over Redlands on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 13-3-2 overall and advance to the SCIAC Championship game for the second consecutive season.
The Sagehens were led by senior Peri Cuppens who notched her first brace of the season and also tallied an assist as well in the win. Freshman Helena Robinowitz and senior Lily Gane netted the other two goals for the Sagehens while junior Brianna Lau tallied two assists with freshman Maya Nitschke-Alonso getting one assist as well.
The Sagehens scored four goals in their Semifinal matchup with the Bulldogs, that is the most the offense has scored since Pomona-Pitzer's 4-0 win over Caltech on October 6th. Pomona-Pitzer wasted no time getting the offense going today as they got on the board within the first four minutes of the match. Cuppens made her way into the box and struck a one-timer off of a pass from Lau to put the Sagehens up early.
Pomona-Pitzer threatened to double up on its lead in the first half but could not find another goal as they went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Much like the first half, the Sagehens came out and scored early in the second half with a goal in the 50th minute. Cuppens found her second goal of the game with a shot just inside the box off of an assist from Lau to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Redlands defense surrendered a penalty shortly after the second goal that gave the Sagehens a chance to put away the game early in the second half; however, the Redlands' keeper came away with a big save that turned momentum in favor of the Bulldogs for a short period of time. Redlands followed up with a few good looks on offense but goalkeeper junior Isa Berardo stayed solid all game long for the Sagehens as they tallied five saves in a combined shutout with freshman Lindsey Uteda.
Robinowitz kept her points streak alive coming off of SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors as she pushed the lead to 3-0 after Cuppens led her down the wing and curled a shot in from the left side. The Sagehens would then end the game with a statement goal as Gane launched a stunning shot from well outside the box that floated over the keeper's had and into the side netting to give the Sagehens a 4-0 lead in the 89th minute.
Up Next: The Sagehens will await the winner of Occidental and Cal Lutheran and will play the Championship game on Saturday, November 3rd at 12:00 p.m. at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
