CLAREMONT, CA. – First-year Hannah Mandell netted a hat-trick to propel the No. 9 Sagehens to a 5-1 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Redlands on Saturday morning at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens are off to their best start in program history and improve to 8-0-1 overall and 4-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Mandell who netted her first career hat-trick in the win while senior Brianna Lau scored a goal and sophomore Ciannah Correa scored her first career goal as a Sagehen. Senior Isa Berardo earned another win in goal to improve to 7-0-1 as a keeper this season and tallied one save while sophomore Lindsey Uteda finished the game with 19 minutes in goal and tallied two saves.
Redlands came out and took it to the Sagehens early and did something no other team has been able to do this season, take a lead over Pomona-Pitzer. The Bulldogs struck first with a goal in the 23rd minute of the match after a nice through ball left a one on one matchup that favored the Bulldogs. Berardo got a diving hand on the shot but couldn't keep it out of goal as Redlands took a 1-0 lead.
That lead was short-lived as the Sagehens came back and answered about 10 minutes later as sophomore Anna Ponzio played a short corner to Lau who blasted a curling shot from outside the box that found the side netting to even the score at 1-1.
Pomona-Pitzer added one more goal before halftime as a couple of first-years hooked up for the go-ahead goal. Taylor Venenciano played a cross into the box that fell to the feet of Mandell who turned and slotted the ball past the keeper to extend the lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.
Mandell picked up right where she left off in the second half. After scoring a goal in the 44th minute before halftime, she netted two more within the first three minutes of the second half to capture the hat-trick inside of five minutes of game time
Senior Bria VarnBuhler set up Mandell's second goal after she tip toed around the defense to get the ball on the goalline and passed a ball that Mandell poked into the back of the net for the 3-1 lead. Mandell then completed the hat-trick with a goal in the 48th minute after taking space in the middle of the field and lobbed in a ball over the keeper's head to extend the lead to 4-1.
Pomona-Pitzer capped off the day with Correa's first career goal as she played herself into the corner of the box and hit a curling ball into the top of the goal to end an impressive offensive performance for the No. 9 Sagehens.
