Women's Soccer: No. 7 Sagehens Sweep Sixth Street Series Over CMS

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team came away with a sweep of the regular season Sixth Street Rivalry after their 1-0 win on Senior Day on Saturday morning at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 12-1-1 overall and 8-1 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by first-year Hannah Mandell who scored the only game of the day in the win.  Senior Isa Berardo came away with the win on senior day, their ninth of the year, and completed their third shutout of the season with two saves.

Before the game, the Sagehens honored their senior class consisting off: Isa Berardo, Bria VarnBuhler, Megan Kuo, Lily Gane and Brianna Lau. The Sagehen senior class went out in style in their last regular season Sixth Street Rivalry of the year as they shut out the Athenas for the classes' sixth win over CMS in their careers.

Pomona-Pitzer had a tough start to the game as the Athenas came out searching for a quick goal. CMS took over possession early on in the game and pressed their attack on Pomona-Pitzer to try to play from in front..  CMS outshot the Sagehens 6-1 in the first 30 minutes and took advantage of some giveaways in the midfield, but the Sagehen defense and Berardo refused to let a goal pass throughout the first half.

The Sagehens had a good chance at a goal just over midway through the first half after VarnBuhler sent a screamer toward the goal that took a touch by the keeper and hit the crossbar as the best chance of the half for the Sagehens bounced away from goal. The Sagehens got their offense going early in the second half and had two big chances within the first 10 minutes after VarnBuhler just missed a shot wide with the Athenas clinging to a 0-0 tie.

Pomona-Pitzer broke through for the only goal of the day after a shot deflected off of the keeper's hands, but Mandell was there for the cleanup as she hit the deflection first time and sent the ball to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.

After scoring the goal, the Sagehens seemed much more comfortable in the midfield and was able to control the ball in the second half and keep possession away from the CMS attackers.  The Athenas could only muster two shots in the second half with just one shot on goal as Pomona-Pitzer held off the comeback for the Sixth Street victory.
